Washing & Care Instructions

Covers, Pockets, and Shells

Picture
There is no "prepping" needed.  Just simply wash once and dry once in the dryer on low/medium heat.

One of the questions I get the most is if they should be unsnapped with each washing.  As this is not necessary it is recommended that they be unsnapped so that there isn't as much tension put on the PUL while wet.

Another big question is whether to dry in the dryer or line dry.  This for the most part is a personal choice. Keep in mind that line drying will extend the life of your diapers and diapers should NEVER be dried on High heat!

Washing Instructions are different for your inserts (Continue Reading)

Prepping Snap-In Inserts & Doublers

Picture
Tajo's inserts are made from Bamboo.  Since Bamboo consists natural oils you want to be sure to wash them separately from your other diapers until all of the oils have completely washed out using 1/4 the recommended amount of your Cloth Diaper safe detergent!

Although your inserts can be used after just one wash they will not be fully absorbent just yet.  Your inserts will not reach full absorbency until the 5th or 6th wash and dry cycle.  To speed up this process you can boil some water and boil the doublers for about 15 minutes.

I DO NOT recommend the boiling method for your Snap-In Inserts since the high heat could damage your snaps.

WASH ROUTINE SUGGESTIONS:
Line drying will always extend the life of your diapers.  Extending the life of your diapers is important if you plan to use them on future babies.  If you do line dry a short time in the drier will soften them up.

When drying your diapers in the dryer do not use any dryer sheets as these can cause build up on your diapers.  If you feel you need something to soften them I suggest trying wool dryer balls, they are a safe way to accomplish the same thing. Always remember to dry on low or no heat to protect the life of your PUL. High heat will damage the PUL.

As part of my wash routine I wash on cold (to break lose any yuckyness), then wash on warm/hot with detergent, and finally do three rinses on warm.  The rinses ensure that you are washing out all of the detergent which will help keep you from getting build up.

DETERGENTS:

Do not use any detergents with additives.  No added scents, softeners, and enzymes.  Sticking with "Cloth Diaper Safe" detergents can sometimes be the best decision (ie: Soap Nuts, Rockin' Green, Free & Clear Detergents, etc).

There are several detergents that can be found locally that many use and have not noticed any problems such as detergents that are "Free and Clear" Keep in mind that detergent companies exaggerate the amount of detergent actually needed in a wash cycle.  A good rule of thumb is to use a 1/4 the recommended amount.  Using the full amount can cause build up over time and compromise the natural fibers which will cause them to not absorb.

Each person’s washing machine, water (hard/soft), type of detergent, etc. will affect the washing process.  If the first way you try doesn’t do the job, try something else.
