How many diapers do I need?

Picture
It all depends on how often you plan to launder your diapers.  The information below will give you an idea of how many diapers you may need per day then just multiply that by the amount of days you want to wait in between washes (ie: if your newborn uses 10-12 diapers and you plan to wash every three days you will want between 30 and 36 diapers).  Please note that this does not include ones you will need for in your diaper bag.

Also if you are using cloth on more than one baby you’ll want to double or triple depending on how many babies.  It is not recommended to wait more than three days between washes so that your diapers do not begin to grow bacteria.  Ideally washing every day or every other day is best.

Newborn babies until 3-4 months of age will go through 10-15 diapers a day.  This means if you wash every two days you will need at least 36 diapers.  Not including the amount you might need for your diaper bag, ones left at grandma's or babysitters.

Older babies (3-9 months) can range based on each child but they will usually go through 8-10 diapers a day. This means you will want to have no less than 21-30 on hand.  Not including the amount you might need for your diaper bag, ones left at grandma's or babysitters.

Toddlers (9 months plus) usually use between 5-10 diapers a day. This means you will want to have no less than 15-30 on hand. Not including the amount you might need for your diaper bag, ones left at grandma's or babysitters.

By choosing Onesize diapers you eliminate needing different sizes or different amounts and worrying about not having enough.  You will never need more at 9+ months than you needed at 1 month. So once you've bought your diapers your done for the full 2+ years of cloth diapering.

What do I get when I order my diaper?

With your pocket diaper you will receive 1 double sided organic bamboo doubler.  The great thing about them is that they are double sided and can lay inside the diaper itself and will be safe against your babys skin.  This also means that you can simply replace the doubler if the diaper lining is still dry.  If you find that you’re wanting extra inserts they can be ordered through our online store.

With the AI2 diapers you can choose which diaper you want to go with your shell.  You have a choice between one with TPU backing or without.
*What is TPU? Basically, it is a waterproof fabric that protects the lining of your shell from getting wet.

Also you may qualify for a FREE gift!! Check out our Free Gifts to see what surprises you can expect with your order!

How many inserts do I need?

Newborns should be changed every 1-2 hours and generally one doubler or snap-in insert will do the trick.   If you find that the inserts are saturated at every diaper change or that you are having leaking try doubling the amount of inserts you use.  If you are planning to reuse your shell or pocket diaper (by laying the insert in on top and not stuffing the pocket) you will want to have at least two extra inserts per diaper.

Can I use diaper rash cream?

Diaper rash ointments will cause build up on your diapers and will cause them to repel moisture.  Which equals leaks.

If diaper rash cream has been used wash your diapers you will need to scrub them (toothbrush works great) with a dishwashing liquid (dawn is a favorite) then run through a regular wash cycle and a couple of rinse cycles.
You will want to make sure there are no suds left on your last rinse before drying.
Keep in mind a small amount of dish washing liquid goes a long way.

This isn’t a guaranteed method but many have found it to be effective.   Another very popular method is to add a small amount of blue dawn to your wash cycle.  ALWAYS check you washers manual to ensure it is safe for your washing machine.

My baby has diaper rash but I cannot use diaper rash cream! What do I do?

There are many reasons for diaper rash.  The most common is prolonged moisture against the skin.  Cloth diapers are best in this case because the lining is a moisture barrier, Some other reasons for diaper rash can be, but are not limited to, food allergies, yeast, skin sensitivity, or chemical irritation. For more information on diaper rash visit Real Diaper Association.

However if diaper rash does show up you can begin by:

Use a baby powder or cornstarch with zinc oxide in it.  Secondly, Cj’s Butter can be purchased at most online cloth diapering stores (currently we do not have this added) and is a favorite with cloth mommies.  Best practices…. Lots of air time for infected tushies and changing diapers often so that baby is clean and dry, If all else fails its best to speak with your pediatrician.

Suggested Detergents….

When it comes to store bought detergents watch for additives such as dyes and perfumes, scents, or brighteners. These additives can and will cause buildup over time and begin repelling and or cause a nasty odor to your diapers.  Suggestions for store bought detergents would be Arm and Hammer Free, ALL Free and Clear, and Tide Free.

However there are cloth diaper specific detergents that can be found at local or online cloth diaper stores.  Suggestions for these would be Rockin’ Green, Country Save, Allens Naturally, or ECO Nuts Soap Nuts.

There is no right or wrong answer when choosing a cloth diaper safe detergent and sadly there is no clear cut straight answer.  So much depends on if you have hard water or soft water or even the type of washing machine you have and the settings it has.  Trial and Error is expected! If its not working for you then simply do something different!
